Storage Cubes
If you have a college student that is heading off to take up residence in a dorm, sending along a generous supply of storage cubes can help that youngster out tremendously because of the flexibility they give to him or her. A storage cube is aptly name because it is a cube usually 2-3 feet squared and a foot deep so it is perfectly formed. The cube is usually made of pressed wood sides with a thin wooden bottom and an opening on one which becomes the "front" when the cube is used for storage in that dorm room.
Because these handy cubes fit together so well, a college student can literally create a wall of them which turns into one huge cabinet to store clothing, books and other personal items in that small dorm room setting. The cubes are also very durable and tough so if they get banged around a bit or even are dropped or fall, they generally hold up to this kind of treatment quite well. They are a versatile answer to a college student's storage needs because they can be used in so many ways.
When you are packing your student off for college, the storage cubes you provided can become moving units. The student can fill each cube with clothing, bedding and other necessities and lay them on their backs facing up on the floor of the trunk of the car or the moving truck and stack them so they keep everything in order but stay where they are put during the move. Then it is easy to get a handheld dolly and take 5-6 cubes up to that dorm room in one step. They can be stacked in the corner to be "unpacked" later at the leisure of the student.
Another great use that many young people find for these kind of storage units is to turn them into shelving. Two units can be placed on the floor facing out 5-6 feet apart. Then 2X4s or plywood can be laid between them and then the same scheme placed on top of the last as the shelving rises to 4-5 levels before it is all done. To make the shelving even more durable, cubes can be used half way along the planks so you have three towers of tubes with shelving between them. This is very handy shelving for a student who is dealing with limited space.
If you are sending a youngster off to college, you can't go wrong setting him or up with a dozen or more of these sturdy and versatile cubes. They are quite inexpensive so for something so useful, they are a great value. Then when you come to visit and you see the great things your youngster has learned to do with those cubes, you may want to try them out for a few storage challenges you have waiting for you back home.
